Controversial former presidential aide and Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has stirred fresh political debate after revealing details of a personal investigation he carried out in Peru over allegations linking Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to an alleged international drug trafficking case.
In a statement posted on X, Omokri said he travelled to Lima, Peru, following repeated claims — largely promoted by former Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo — that Peter Obi allegedly sponsored a female drug courier who was arrested and later mentioned him during court proceedings in the South American nation.
According to Omokri, he visited a women’s prison in Lima alongside a witness and a video camera to verify the claims. He added that he also met with Peruvian authorities during the investigation and eventually discovered that there was no evidence connecting Obi to any drug trafficking activity.
Omokri explained that the Peru trip came shortly after his visit to the United States in September 2022, where he investigated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s academic records at Chicago State University.
The former presidential aide further disclosed that after concluding his findings in Peru, he contacted Asari Dokubo directly and advised him to stop repeating the allegations against Obi because they were false.
“I told him it was morally wrong to accuse a man of a crime he is innocent of,” Omokri stated, adding that Dokubo reportedly agreed with him during their conversation.
He also urged politicians and their supporters ahead of the 2027 elections to avoid spreading what he described as false and already-debunked allegations capable of misleading Nigerians and worsening political tension in the country.
Omokri maintained that he personally funded both investigations out of patriotism and commitment to justice, insisting that no individual or political group sponsored his trips or findings.
