Reports and online chatter have begun circulating unverified figures and projections about Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, even as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has not released any official presidential election results or related data.
In what appears to be part of the growing wave of social media speculation, some posts claim that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has “quietly bagged 20 million votes.” The claim, however, has not been backed by any official electoral body, party statement, or credible result sheet.
Similarly, other viral discussions are attributing exaggerated vote totals to major political figures ahead of any formal election process. One widely shared narrative paints a highly unrealistic “scoreline-style” projection for 2027, suggesting figures such as 45 million votes for Labour Party’s Peter Obi, 20 million for Atiku Abubakar, and 10.9 million for President Bola Tinubu — despite no primary elections or general election results being released.
Political observers describe the trend as typical of early-cycle misinformation and hype, where supporters and online commentators amplify speculative numbers for engagement and political narrative-building rather than factual reporting.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has been mentioned in some of these discussions, is yet to issue any official election result or statement relating to such claims.
Analysts caution that while political enthusiasm is expected to rise ahead of 2027, Nigerians should treat unverified figures circulating on social media as rumour rather than fact, especially in the absence of formal electoral processes or certified results.
For now, the “basketball scoreline” style projections remain part of the country’s expanding online political satire and speculation space — not electoral reality.
