Catholic priest, Fr. Kelvin Ugwu, has reacted to the reported political alignment between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 presidential election, urging Nigerians to play their role by voting and ensuring that their votes count.
According to the priest, Peter Obi has already done his part by securing a place on the ballot and making efforts to build strategic alliances, including reaching out to Kwankwaso.
"It is now up to Nigerians to do their part by voting and also going the extra mile to ensure that their votes count," he said.
Fr. Ugwu noted that one of the greatest obstacles to political change is psychological defeat, arguing that many citizens have already convinced themselves that meaningful change is impossible.
"The worst kind of defeat is psychological defeat. Some of you are already psychologically defeated," he stated.
He further argued that Obi could have easily blamed the government for frustrating his political ambitions, but instead explored alternative options to remain politically relevant and competitive.
"Peter Obi could have gone to sleep claiming that the government frustrated every move to keep him off the ballot. Instead, he found other means," he said.
Drawing a lesson from Obi's approach, Fr. Ugwu urged Nigerians not to surrender to hopelessness but to find every lawful and possible way to ensure that their votes are protected and counted.
"These people are not more powerful than the people. In the same way, we too ought to find every possible means to ensure that our votes count," the priest added.
