Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has donated ₦25 million to the University of the Niger, Umunya, in Anambra State, as part of his continued support for education and human capital development in Nigeria.
Obi made the donation during a visit to the institution on Thursday, May 7, 2026, where he encouraged students to remain committed to their studies and personal development. He emphasized that the future of Nigeria depends largely on the knowledge, innovation, and discipline of young people.
According to him, the world is increasingly driven by knowledge and education, making sustained investment in students and learning institutions essential for national progress. He explained that the donation is intended to support scholarships and contribute to the overall development of the university.
The former Anambra State governor also commended the Diocese on the Niger for establishing and sustaining the institution within a relatively short period, describing it as a commendable vision for educational advancement.
Obi further praised the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, for his commitment to strengthening academic standards and supporting the growth of higher institutions in Nigeria.
He reaffirmed his dedication to supporting education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, stressing that no nation can develop beyond the quality of its education and human capital.
