Umuahia, Abia State – Governor Alex Otti has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to democracy and political inclusiveness, declaring that opposition parties are free to campaign anywhere in Abia State, provided they comply with the necessary requirements.
Speaking on the political atmosphere in the state, Otti stated that his government welcomes healthy competition from opposition parties and will not obstruct any group from accessing campaign venues after fulfilling the stipulated conditions.
We welcome competition from opposition in Abia State. Any opposition party is free to apply for any location they want in Abia State for campaign, as long as they pay the required fee. Once you pay, I will make the venue available for you," the governor said.
He emphasized that the decision on leadership ultimately rests with the people of Abia State, stressing that democratic principles should guide political engagements.
"It is now left for the people of Abia State to decide who they want to follow," he added.
Governor Otti also criticized what he described as past practices where political parties or groups would secure venues for events only to be denied access later, describing such actions as signs of insecurity and panic.
"The days of panic are gone. Sometimes you pay for a venue and you are later prevented from using it, that is panic. If you know what you are doing, you should not be panicking," he stated.
The governor's remarks are expected to reassure political stakeholders ahead of future electoral activities, as he pledged a level playing field for all parties operating within the state.
Political observers say the statement reflects the administration's intention to promote democratic participation and foster an atmosphere where political competition can thrive without intimidation or undue restrictions.
