Tensions are rising in Nigeria’s opposition politics as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (Nigeria Democratic Congress) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (All Progressives Congress) of secretly inserting sponsored aspirants into its ranks to destabilize the party ahead of its primaries.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, alleged that the NDC uncovered “moles” linked to the APC during its screening exercise ahead of Friday’s primaries.
According to him, the suspected infiltrators were identified and confronted, effectively blocking their chances of securing the party’s ticket.
“We know some aspirants are being sponsored by the ruling party. We confronted them directly, and they already know they are not getting the ticket,” he said.
The party insisted it would not allow opportunistic politicians to hijack its platform, stressing that the NDC is not a “special-purpose vehicle” for power seekers taking advantage of the rising popularity of the political movement associated with Peter Obi (Peter Obi) and Rabiu Kwankwaso (Rabiu Kwankwaso).
Director said the party had become more cautious after studying what it described as past mistakes by the Labour Party, warning against the influx of newcomers with little or no political background who were allegedly attempting to ride on the momentum of growing public dissatisfaction with the current administration.
“We are not following the Labour Party playbook. We have learned from history,” he added.
He further maintained that only loyal members with proven credibility and ideological commitment would be allowed to emerge as candidates.
The allegations have already triggered reactions within political circles, raising fresh questions about alleged underground maneuvering ahead of Nigeria’s next major electoral contests.
