The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi, an incident that occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun.
In an official update issued from Force Headquarters, Abuja, the police confirmed that the officers linked to the incident were earlier withdrawn from the Delta State Command on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu. They were subsequently redeployed to Abuja, where they underwent accelerated disciplinary proceedings.
The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), after concluding its investigation, found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, violated Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms. The committee described his conduct as unlawful, unprofessional, and a breach of his duty to protect life.
Based on the findings, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other culpable officers. The Inspector-General has approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification in accordance with due process.
Police authorities further disclosed that upon the completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the extrajudicial killing.
Reaffirming the Force’s stance, the IGP stressed that the police maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards extrajudicial actions and abuse of power, warning that any officer found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that justice will be served and that the matter will be handled with the seriousness it deserves to reinforce public trust and accountability.
The Force urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
