A dramatic scene unfolded at the Eziowelle High Court in Anambra State, as a woman publicly knelt before another she had defamed on social media, tearfully pleading for forgiveness.
The emotional moment followed a court ruling that found her guilty of making false accusations against the victim on Facebook and TikTok. According to reports, the court gave the offender two options: serve a six-month prison sentence or issue a public apology admitting that her claims were untrue.
Choosing the latter, the woman complied with the court’s directive in a deeply emotional display, addressing the victim as “my sister” while begging for forgiveness.
In her apology, she stated:
“From the deepest part of my heart, I’m sorry. Everything I have been saying about you on Facebook and TikTok is false, please forgive me.”
Witnesses described the scene as both tense and moving, highlighting the serious consequences of spreading false information online.
The case has sparked conversations about the growing misuse of social media platforms and the legal implications of defamation in Nigeria. Legal experts note that the ruling serves as a warning that individuals can be held accountable for damaging others’ reputations through unverified or false claims online.
