A motorist shared the emotional story of a frail man believed to be in his 70s, struggling to hawk cheese balls despite his apparent health challenges, raising concerns about the hardship many elderly Nigerians face without adequate care or support.
"Something brok£ my heart today as I returned from work. Around 5 pm while driving back, traffic got a little bit heavy. There was a stand still, cars huffing and puffing, horns honking and thonking.
In the midst of the Hullabaloo. An Aged man appeared. I'd say he was about 70 years or above. He had Grey hair to corroborate.
If i am correct, he had a Brown kaftan with shorts with a knitted Cap whose hems were imprinted with dirts from sweat.
I saw the way he walked, I could tell he has had a stroke in the past. He had a hemiplegic gait, he swung his leg outward and back inward to maintain his balance. I saw the way he was limping.
His joints looked deformed, I could tell he had osteoarthritis.
He kept swaying from side to side in pains.
He wasn't comfortable.
I looked into his eyes from my car window, I could not see them, I saw streaks of sweat appearing as beaded artifacts dropping as he made his way within the car traffic.
What was shocking and broke my heart.
He was hawking Cheese Balls.
Apparently, There is a new Cheese Balls that is being marketed, a fairly large pack.
You could see him diligently moving from car to car begging people to buy his Cheese balls.
As he hawked, he gave a little smile that revealed his Diastemma and perhaps a Tobacco stained teeth.
It got me thinking, How can a man in his 70s be hawking Cheese balls on the road.
This was a man that should be in his house enjoying some pension and elderly care funds to take care of him.
I could tell he needed urgent medical attention, but here was a man hustling in his old age, I thought.
What could have happened?
What was the back story?
In the midst of my thoughts, a little path was cleared by cars and I drove.
But for some reasons, a cloak of sadness filled my heart. I kept looking at the man"
