Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged the Federal Government to prioritise the rehabilitation and maintenance of Nigeria's existing road network instead of embarking on new road construction and dualisation projects.
In a statement titled "My Stance on Road Development," Obi argued that repairing major highways currently in use would have a greater impact on the lives of Nigerians than launching new infrastructure projects that offer limited immediate benefits.
He cited the Asaba–Benin Road as a key example, describing it as one of Nigeria's most important transport corridors linking several states, including Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Rivers, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Abia, Enugu, and parts of Benue and Kogi, to Lagos.
According to Obi, large sections of the highway are in poor condition, causing severe traffic congestion and creating hardship for travellers, businesses, and transport operators.
He noted that the situation on the Asaba–Benin Road reflects the state of many of Nigeria's busiest highways, stressing that government efforts should focus on reconstructing and maintaining existing roads before announcing new projects.
"The Nigerian people need functional and motorable roads, not projects designed mainly to attract public attention," Obi said.
He concluded by urging leaders to place the nation's infrastructure needs above political considerations, adding, "A new Nigeria is possible."
