In Ota, Ogun State, what could have ended in a heartbreaking tragedy was stopped just in time.
A man identified as Owolabi Moses, who works as a driver for a depot owner, Mr. Chidozie Joseph, allegedly planned something unthinkable — the kidnapping and murder of his own boss, Mr. Chidozie.
Reports say Owolabi didn’t act alone. He was said to have worked with three other men, with the intention of abducting Mr. Chidozie, demanding ransom from his family, and still going ahead to kill him afterward.
But the plan didn’t go as expected.
One of the men involved — a butcher who had initially agreed to take part — began to feel uneasy. According to the report, guilt took over him. Instead of going through with the crime, he made a decision that changed everything: he went to the community vigilante group, So Safe Security, and exposed the entire plot.
That single act of conscience led to the arrest of the other suspects, who have now been handed over to the police. There are also reports that the suspects have confessed to their roles during interrogation.
What makes the story even more disturbing is the thought of what could have happened if that man had stayed silent. An Igbo businessman could have been kidnapped and killed, and the truth possibly buried under the excuse of “unknown Fulani Bandit".
But this time, conscience spoke louder than crime and a life was likely saved.
