A court in Akwa Ibom has sentenced 33-year-old Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson to death after he was found guilty of killing his girlfriend during an argument over her phone and fleeing with the device.
What started as a disagreement over a phone reportedly ended in a tragedy that claimed a young woman's life and ultimately led to a death sentence for her boyfriend.
According to court findings, 33-year-old Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, a church usher, was at his girlfriend's apartment when he asked to use her phone to make a birthday post online. The request was reportedly declined, leading to an argument between the couple.
The disagreement soon escalated into a physical confrontation. During the altercation, Nelson allegedly slammed the woman's head against a wall, inflicting injuries that resulted in her death.
In an apparent attempt to cover his tracks, he reportedly took the victim's phone and fled the apartment immediately after the incident.
Following an investigation, operatives of the Nigerian Police tracked Nelson to a church in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he was arrested during a night vigil service.
During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and was subsequently arraigned before the court.
After considering the evidence presented, Honourable Justice Ekpo Ntekim of the Akwa Ibom State High Court found Nelson guilty of the offence and sentenced him to death.
The case stands as a tragic reminder of how a moment of uncontrolled anger can lead to devastating and irreversible consequences.
