Ekene Agala was beaten to a pulp after a woman claimed he stole ₦2m and said “there’s CCTV footage.” Residents descended on him in jungle justice.
His name is Ekene Agala, an innocent young man who was nearly lynched after a woman accused him of stealing.
The woman initially alleged that Ekene stole ₦2 million and claimed there was CCTV footage to support her accusation. Based on that allegation, estate security personnel and some residents descended on him, subjecting him to brutal jungle justice.
As the assault continued, Ekene repeatedly shouted that he was innocent. Moved by his persistent pleas, some reasonable people at the scene suggested that the CCTV footage be reviewed.
That was when the story suddenly changed.
The same woman who had insisted there was CCTV evidence then claimed there was no CCTV footage after all. Instead, she alleged that a little child had seen Ekene taking the money.
If the CCTV had not been checked, an innocent young man could have lost his life over an unverified accusation.
But when people demanded to see the footage, her story changed: “There’s no CCTV. A child saw him.”
An innocent man almost lost his life over a lie that fell apart the moment evidence was asked for.
If you were in that crowd, would you have stopped to verify first?
