A Magistrate Court has fined a university student, Rhoda Adu, the sum of ₦150,000 for failing to honor a promise to visit her boyfriend after collecting money for transportation.
According to court proceedings, Rhoda’s boyfriend, Mr. Olapitan, had transferred ₦3,000 to her to enable her travel and visit him.
However, after receiving the money, Rhoda allegedly switched off her phone and stopped responding to his calls and messages.
Following several failed attempts to reach her, Mr. Olapitan reported the matter to the police, prompting an investigation and subsequent legal action.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence including the bank transfer receipt showing the ₦3,000 payment and WhatsApp messages exchanged between both parties. The court held that the evidence sufficiently proved that Rhoda received the money under false pretenses.
The Magistrate Court found Rhoda guilty and imposed a fine of ₦150,000 as punishment for her actions.
The case has since sparked mixed reactions, with many Nigerians debating the legal implications of personal agreements and financial promises in relationships.
