Defence Says It Approved Us Strike on Terrorists in Northwest
The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, in collaboration with the United States, carried out coordinated airstrikes against foreign ISIS-linked elements operating in parts of North-West Nigeria. The confirmation was made early Friday in a statement issued in Abuja by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba.
According to the statement, the precision strikes were conducted with the approval of appropriate Federal Government authorities and form part of ongoing efforts to eliminate terrorists and other criminal elements threatening national security. The Defence Headquarters said the operation was based on credible intelligence and followed careful operational planning aimed at degrading the capability of the targeted elements while minimizing collateral damage.
It noted that the action underscores the Federal Government’s resolve, working with strategic partners, to confront transnational terrorism and prevent foreign fighters from establishing or expanding their presence within Nigeria. The Armed Forces of Nigeria reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property and to supporting joint and inter-agency efforts to restore lasting peace and security across the country.
Meanwhile, United States President Donald Trump had earlier confirmed that American forces conducted airstrikes against Islamic State elements operating in north-western Nigeria, adding that more actions would follow.
