She had food to cook but couldn’t light her stove because she had no matches. With shops closed on Sunday, she had to wait until 1pm before she could borrow matches from a neighbour. She said the helplessness was worse than the hunger.
"When I couldn’t eat because of 10naira.I was the only catholic in my neighborhood in school. It was on a Sunday morning and I decided to attend morning mass. I returned home by 9am, my neighbors had all gone to church and no shop was opened.
I did not have garri at home and decided to make oil rice. The only problem was that my matches had finished. I could have gone to buy from any of the bigger shops far from my house that opens on Sundays but they don’t know me. The shops around me that know me were not opened.
I fasted till 1pm when my neighbors returned from church before I could borrow matches to light my stove. A match box was just 10 naira. The helplessness was worse than the hunger"
