The Anambra State Government has strengthened its preparedness for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) through a one-day training for airport medical personnel, transport workers and ambulance service personnel to improve early detection and response to suspected cases.
The training, organised by the Anambra State Ministry of Health on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, in line with the state’s efforts to strengthen public health emergency preparedness, focused on improving disease surveillance, prompt reporting and safe transportation of suspected cases.
The facilitators included the State Epidemiologist, Dr Chuma Emebolu; State Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer, Chijioke Chinemelu; Infection Prevention and Control Lead, Dr Kenneth Nwokolo; Viral Haemorrhagic Fever Case Manager, Dr Peter Anierobi; and the Chief Medical Director of Umueri General Hospital and airport clinician, Dr Obi Chinenye.
The experts educated participants on recognising possible warning signs, reporting suspected cases promptly and following approved safety procedures. They also stressed the need for effective communication and coordination between frontline workers, health authorities and designated health facilities.
Particular attention was given to infection prevention and control measures to protect health workers, transport personnel and members of the public from possible exposure during emergency operations.
The training also featured the participation of Dr Bono of the World Health Organization (WHO), highlighting the importance of collaboration between the state government and development partners in strengthening disease surveillance and emergency response.
The facilitators noted that airport personnel, transport workers and ambulance teams play important roles in identifying possible health threats, raising alerts and ensuring that suspected cases are safely referred for medical assessment.
The initiative forms part of the Ministry of Health’s broader efforts to improve the state’s ability to respond to Ebola and other public health emergencies through early detection, proper reporting and coordinated action.
The Anambra State Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting residents through continued preparedness, public health surveillance and cooperation among government agencies, healthcare facilities and development partners.
