The Abia governor, who was Diamond Bank CEO in 2014, says he personally helped Obi convert $155 million into investments and can confirm that the former governor left the money he claimed.
Amid the ongoing controversy over the money Peter Obi said he left behind in Anambra State, Governor Alex Otti has given a firsthand account, insisting that Obi actually left the money he claimed to have left.
Otti, who was the CEO of Diamond Bank in 2014, said he was personally involved in the process. According to him, Obi came to his office intending to keep the funds in cash, but the bank advised against it.
Otti said he personally helped Obi convert about $155 million from naira to dollars, after which the money was invested in Eurobonds and Tier 2 capital of some banks.
He added that some of the investments had maturities extending to 2020, meaning some of the funds were not due for withdrawal when Obi left office.
“As a participant at that time, clearly, 2014, I would like to again state that Peter Obi actually left the money he said he left,” Otti said.
