Barrister Nnaemeka Okeke, lawyer representing the family accused of assaulting an 11-year-old boy, has broken silence after today’s court sitting — and his defence is already sparking outrage online.
According to the lawyer, the husband of the woman accused was charged alongside his wife, but he believes the case is being blown out of proportion. He said he was shocked to see attempted murder among the charges, insisting that from the facts before the court, the matter looks more like assault causing grievous bodily harm and not an attempt to kill the child.
In a statement that has now triggered reactions, the lawyer described the incident as “a harsh correction of a stubborn child,” arguing that many people from older generations experienced strict discipline while growing up.
He also accused the police of turning the matter into persecution instead of proper prosecution, claiming there is no evidence to prove the couple intended to kill the boy.
Despite his argument, the court ordered that both husband and wife be remanded in custody pending further investigation and DPP advice.
The case has continued to generate anger across social media after the disturbing video of the injured 11-year-old apprentice went viral, with many Nigerians demanding justice for the child.
