Veteran Nollywood actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known for his iconic role as Papa Ajasco in the long-running Nigerian comedy series Papa Ajasco & Company, has opened up about the financial struggles he has faced despite decades of fame.
The 65-year-old actor revealed that he was paid ₦22,500 per episode when he started acting the role in 1997. Nearly three decades later, he says the payment has only increased to ₦45,000 per episode in 2026.
Speaking about his current situation, Ayoyinka lamented that after years of portraying the beloved character, he still does not own a personal house or car.
According to him, the character “Papa Ajasco” is legally registered by the show's creator, Wale Adenuga, which means he cannot use the character for endorsements or commercial deals without permission.
“I was getting ₦22,500 per episode of Papa Ajasco in 1997. Now in 2026 they pay me ₦45,000. I don’t have a home or car of my own,” the actor said.
He added that the situation has made life difficult for him over the years, stressing that things have not been easy financially.
“I can’t take deals as Papa Ajasco without permission because the character has been registered by Wale Adenuga. Things have never been okay for years back now — no car of my own, no house of my own,” he lamented.
Ayoyinka’s revelation has sparked conversations online about how veteran actors in the Nigerian entertainment industry are treated, with many Nigerians expressing sympathy and calling for better welfare for industry pioneers.
His story highlights the struggles some entertainers face behind the scenes despite their popularity and long-standing contributions to the industry.
