Berlin/Washington – Friedrich Merz has revealed that he is yet to receive clear answers regarding what will happen in Iran after the end of the war, even after holding talks with Donald Trump in Washington.
Speaking in an interview with German television broadcaster ZDF shortly after concluding his meeting with President Trump, Chancellor Merz said many critical questions remain unanswered, particularly concerning the United States’ post-war strategy for Iran.
Merz noted that while discussions were extensive, there was no concrete clarification on America’s long-term plan for stabilizing Iran once the conflict comes to an end.
Earlier, President Trump had suggested that “one of the current leaders” within Iran’s government could potentially assume leadership. However, he did not provide further details on how such a transition of power would be achieved or supported.
Chancellor Merz had traveled to the United States primarily for talks centered on the war in Ukraine and ongoing trade tariff issues. Nevertheless, the conflict in Iran ultimately dominated much of his discussions with President Trump.
The uncertainty surrounding Iran’s political future continues to raise concerns among international observers, as global leaders seek clearer direction on the next steps following the war.
