A court in Ebonyi State has sentenced several young men from Ngbo, Ohaukwu LGA, to death by hanging over their involvement in a fatal shooting linked to the 2023 general elections.
According to accounts presented during the trial, the incident occurred when the group was allegedly patrolling the area in a vehicle branded with the All Progressives Congress (APC). During the patrol, a young shop owner was reportedly shot in his store, an event that triggered outrage and widespread reactions within the community.
The court delivered its judgment last year, condemning the defendants after legal proceedings. Following the ruling, they were transferred to Enugu Prison, where they remain in custody pending further legal processes.
The case has continued to generate discussion among residents and observers, with many pointing to it as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with political violence and extreme displays of loyalty during election periods. Community voices have stressed the need for peaceful civic engagement and adherence to the rule of law, particularly during politically sensitive times.
