The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has described the recent altercation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer as an unfortunate reflection of Nigeria’s growing institutional disorder.
In a statement on Wednesday, Obi expressed concern over the incident, noting that it raises serious questions about the use of the military in civil operations, the respect for established institutions, and the sanctity of the separation of powers.
He stressed that the confrontation highlights the urgent need to rebuild Nigeria’s governance system to ensure that institutions are stronger than individuals. According to him, a society where the dignity of uniformed officers and the rights of citizens are respected is essential for national progress.
“The incident is a sad reminder that we must return to a nation where our institutions function independently, and respect for both authority and citizens’ rights is paramount,” Obi stated.
Reaffirming his vision for a reformed Nigeria, Obi added, “A New Nigeria is possible.”
