Barrister Alloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has issued a statement clarifying that the IPOB leader did not terminate the services of his legal team, contrary to widespread reports.
According to Ejimakor, senior lawyers such as Barrister Agabi SAN, Onyechi Ikpeazu SAN, and others remain part of the team. The announcement circulating online was reportedly made at a time when the legal team realized that the court had predetermined the conviction of Kanu.
Ejimakor explained that no amount of senior lawyers could have altered the outcome, given that Kanu was being tried on issues outside the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.
Following this realization, the team consulted with Kanu, who opted to defend himself as the conviction seemed inevitable. The full legal team will now proceed to the Court of Appeal, focusing on the issues that trial judge, Justice Omotosho, declined to address.
Ejimakor emphasized that Kanu's case is inherently political and necessitates a political solution, particularly in light of the repeal of the law under which he was charged.
He maintained that the conviction lacks a legal basis in Nigerian law. Ejimakor urged the public to understand the true circumstances surrounding the case and avoid misinterpretations
