Former Nigerian football star Jay-Jay Okocha has come to the defense of the current Super Eagles team, attributing their poor performance to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and their coaching appointments.
In a statement, Okocha expressed his disappointment with the current state of Nigerian football, citing the example of Finidi George's appointment as coach.Okocha recalled that during Finidi George's tenure as coach, key players like Victor Osimhen were not invited to play in World Cup qualifiers against Benin. According to Okocha, George's approach was based on personal relationships rather than player qualifications. Okocha questioned George's decision, stating that taking home-based players to meet Benin was a recipe for failure.
Despite the current team's struggles, Okocha remains confident in their abilities and believes they can still feature in the World Cup. He emphasized that the team's potential is hindered by poor management and coaching decision.
Okocha also mentioned his aspirations to become the NFF chairman, stating that if appointed, he would bring positive changes to Nigerian football. He expressed his confidence in his ability to lead the NFF and improve the sport in Nigeria.
