Anambra State is in mourning following the sudden death of veteran journalist and cultural custodian, Dr. Harris Udokama Chuma-Odili, also known as "Eze Ogbono" or "Ogene Ogbunike".
He passed away on August 23, 2025, after slumping at a public function hosted by a rival aspirant for the Igwe stool of Ogbunike town, where Chuma-Odili was also a contender.Chuma-Odili attended a function at his rival's gathering, where he was reportedly in high spirits, exchanging pleasantries and preparing to spray money on dancing women. He suddenly slumped backwards while attempting to spray the women, and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.
Despite efforts to save him, he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but sadly lost the battle.
Chuma-Odili was a renowned peace advocate, fearless activist, and community mobilizer who left behind a legacy of cultural pride, media activism, and commitment to Igbo heritage.
His death has sparked an outpouring of grief across Anambra's social media space, with many describing him as "a fearless voice," "a cultural icon," and "a man who lived life with a big heart".
The Ogbunike community is in a state of mourning, with many labeling the incident "Nnukwu Alu melu na Ogbunike", expressing shock and sadness at his untimely passing.
The family has announced his passing and expressed deep sorrow, but submitted to the will of God and their ancestors.
