Awka, Nigeria – July 10, 2025
Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, are demanding justice following the tragic death of a law student, Ajana Isabella, who reportedly died after being denied urgent access to her medication.
Ajana, a diabetic and resident of Elmada Hostel, allegedly suffered a health crisis after she and her roommates lost their room key and were unable to retrieve her insulin on time. According to multiple student accounts, the trio approached their hostel mistress, identified as Madam Bright, to request a spare key. However, they claim she refused to provide the spare unless they paid a fee of N120,000, demanding N40,000 from each roommate as per hostel policy.
Despite explaining their inability to raise the amount immediately and emphasizing the urgency of accessing Ajana’s life-saving medication, their plea was reportedly ignored. As her condition worsened, Ajana was eventually rushed to a hospital on Sunday, July 6, but tragically passed away on Wednesday, July 9.
The incident has sparked outrage across the university community, with students calling for accountability. The hashtag #Justice4Ajana is now trending among students and supporters online, demanding that the university and hostel authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
“This is beyond negligence — it’s inhumane,” one student said. “Someone’s life was at stake, and we were told to pay N120,000 before she could access her medication. This could have been avoided.”
As of press time, the university authorities have yet to release an official statement on the matter. Students are urging the school administration and law enforcement to intervene and ensure justice is served.
