What Happened To Dat N.I.G.G.A Raw?
Mr Raw, formerly Dat N.I.G.G.A. Raw, emerged in the early 2000s with his unique Igbo rap style, rising to fame with hits like "Obodo." Despite a name change in 2010 and surviving a serious car accident in 2021, he continues to influence Nigeria's music scene.
Born Okechukwu Edwards Ukeje, in Enugu, better known by his stage name Mr Raw (formerly Dat N.I.G.G.A. Raw) is a rapper originally from Abia State, Nigeria.
He gained prominence during the early 2000s rapping in the Igbo language and Pidgin English. He took the nation by storm with his hit song "Obodo"
Raw, released an album in 2005 and 2007. It was his third studio album "End of Discussion" released in October 2010, that yielded the hit song "O! Chukwu" whose music video won Best Afro Hip Hop Video at the NMVA Awards that year.
In 2010, Raw announced that he would change his name from "Dat Niggga Raw" to "Mr. Raw", stating that the negative connotations associated to the word "niggga" resulted in his name being censored abroad and prevented people from purchasing his music online.
In August 2021, Mr. Raw confirmed that himself and his driver were hospitalised due to a car accident at the Federal Capital Territory. He recuperated and got back on his feet.
Ukeje is married, but has cited that he prefers to keep his family life private.
Raw, remains the pioneer of Igbo rap, a genre that now appeals to a broad, mainstream audience.
